The "Paris Declaration" on the evolution of the role of European customs was officially adopted during the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the European Customs Union.

The Paris Declaration on the evolution of the role of European customs was officially adopted during the 40th anniversary celebrations of the European Customs Union. Eric Woerth, Minister for the Budget, Public Accounts and the Civil Service in Bercy (Paris), presided over the ceremony in the presence of Lászlo Kovács, the European Commissioner for Taxation and Customs Union, and the Customs Directors-General of the 27 EU Member States, Turkey and Croatia.

The Paris Declaration sets common strategic aims for the European customs services allowing them to meet the challenges of a constantly-changing economic environment. When conducting controls of goods, the customs services must actually find the right balance between protecting citizens in a context of increasing risks, and facilitating trade exchange designed to promote the competitiveness of companies.
