To highlight the importance of intercultural dialogue as one of the European Union's key themes of 2008, the Ministry of Health, Youth, Sport and the Voluntary Sector decided to organise a youth event in Marseille from 5 - 9 July bringing together over 150 young people from 50 countries.
Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin highlighted the event at a press conference on 7 July and paid special tribute to the young delegates' determination to take part in a series of debates. She also repeated France's commitment to promoting dialogue among young people from all nations and backgrounds.
This inspired idea encouraged Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin to invite the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and conductor Daniel Barenboïm to give a one-off performance on Tuesday 8 July. The composition and founding principles of this orchestra symbolize the very essence of the event: 80 talented and courageous young musicians aged between thirteen and twenty-six from Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Spain form a project that helps to promote dialogue through music and working together.
