Seminar on the Energy-Climate Package
- On: 03.09.2008
- In: Brussels, European Parliament
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) France is organising a lunch-debate on the theme of the climate-energy package to discuss France’s capacity to achieve a 30% reduction in its CO2 emissions by 2020 and to present its analysis of the amendments currently being discussed at the European Parliament.
Following the seminar held by the WWF-France at the European Parliament on 25 June 2008, which aimed to show how Europe as a whole can cut its greenhouse gas emissions, this new seminar is an opportunity to focus solely on France. Speakers will include:
- Thierry Salomon, Chairman of the Négawatt Association, will present the Négawatt scenario to show that it is possible to cut carbon emissions by 30% in France. This requires a dual effort in terms of the production of renewable energy sources and, above all, in energy consumption. As well as outlining the short-term economic and social benefits of such a target, Thierry Salomon will stress the need to introduce strong measures and policies as quickly as possible, particularly within the context of the climate-energy package.
- Damien Demailly, Director of the Climate/Energy Programme at the WWF France, will present the WWF’s analysis of the amendments submitted by the ENVI and ITRE Committees and will focus on two directives currently under discussion: first, on sharing the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions among Member States and, second, on the revision of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). He will also raise the crucial question of ETS auctioning and carbon leakage.
