On the margins of the General Affairs and External Relations Committee meeting on 15 and 16 September 2008, the Minister of State for European Affairs, Jean-Pierre Jouyet, will chair the 8th European Union-Uzbekistan Cooperation Council.

The 8th EU-Uzbekistan Cooperation Council will be held in Brussels on 16 September.

Chaired by Jean-Pierre Jouyet, Minister of State for European Affairs, the Cooperation Council will be the opportunity to review EU-Uzbekistan relations, with a view to re-examining the sanctions imposed by the Council on 13 and 14 October and broaching issues related to the implementation of the EU's Central Asia Strategy and regional cooperation.

It will also be an opportunity to exchange views on international issues and help prepare the forthcoming meetings of the French EU Presidency on the region, particularly the first European Union-Central Asia Forum on Security Issues (Paris, 18 September 2008).

The Cooperation Council marks a new stage in EU-Uzbekistan relations, by helping to strengthen political dialogue, and allows the EU to show its willingness to deepen its relations with Uzbekistan on the basis of the progress achieved in crucial areas, including the rule of law and the respect for human rights.
