International protection of vulnerable adults - Press release

The Ministry of Justice is organising a conference on : "the international protection of vulnerable adults"

This Conference comes on the eve of France's filing of the instruments of ratification of the Hague Convention dated 13 January 2000 on the international protection of adults.

The aim of this event is to give us a chance to discuss with our partners in Europe the care of adults who have been disabled by the deterioration of their faculties. This event should also be an opportunity to continue discussing the effects of globalisation and the movements of population to which it gives rise.

The January 2000 Hague Convention is a particularly interesting response to this situation and France's ratification of it will enable it to come into force. We must, however, hope that many other countries will also ratify the Convention if we are to cope with the new security and freedom needs that this increased mobility requires.

The European Union also constitutes an ideal forum for cooperation between States to make the lives of their citizens simpler whilst ensuring their protection.

The Conference will also be an opportunity to promote the work of the Council of Europe which is currently studying what resources can be given to adults to make provision for their protection in the event of future disability.
