Meeting on the framework project for the protection of classified information within the European Union

  • On: 17.09.2008
  • In: Paris

Following on from several working groups held over 2008, the French Presidency is to hold a meeting on 17 September concerning the overhaul and improvement of regulations protecting classified information in the European Union.

European regulations on the protection of classified information are diverse and particularly complex. Currently the Council of the European Union and the European Commission each have their own legislative texts, of which the binding nature on the Member States and other EU bodies and institutions is subject to interpretation.
Created initially as an internal tool for institutional use, European classified information has gradually become EU common property but its protection and conservation is no longer guaranteed by rules which are unevenly applied throughout EU territory.

Accordingly, through the project put forward by France's National Defence General Secretariat (SGDN), the French Presidency wishes to promote the implementation of a single legal framework which would be legally binding and applicable to both the Member States and the European Institutions. Overhauling European confidentiality legislation will contribute to strengthening the security of the European Union and its Member States and facilitate cooperation within the EU.

The meeting's key aim is, therefore, to finalise the content of the new, legal framework in this area.
