The EPODE towns congress will be held on 2 and 3 October 2008 in Béziers, France. The central theme will be the prevention of childhood obesity and the role of local policymakers in implementing grassroots actions.
The French Presidency of the Council of the European Union is organising an EPODE towns congress on 2 and 3 October 2008 in Béziers to discuss the prevention of childhood obesity and the role of local policymakers in implementing grassroots actions.
EPODE ('Ensemble, Prévenons l'Obésité des Enfants' - 'Together, Let's Prevent Childhood Obesity') is a preventive healthcare programme that was first launched in 10 pilot towns in France to combat obesity among children aged 5 to 12. This programme is implemented at local level to involve the entire community. Since 2006, the programme has been extended to other European countries including Belgium and Spain and it is currently being adapted in Greece.
Following the European club of EPODE mayors conference in Brussels on 27 June 2008, this congress aims to give local policymakers a greater role as key players in developing local preventive healthcare programmes, particularly with regard to the prevention of childhood obesity, and to highlight the importance of political commitment at all levels for the implementation of grassroots actions.
