Combating Violence Against Women in Conflicts: What consequences for ESDP?

The French Presidency, which counts combating violence against women as one of its priorities, has seized on the opportunity offered by the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1820 in June 2008 to work towards reinforcing the implementation of European policies on violence against women in conflicts and post-conflict situations.
In Brussels on 10 October 2008 the French Presidency of the European Union is organising "Implementing SCR 1325 and 1820 in ESDP missions: Improving Immediate and Long-Term Security for Women" in cooperation with UNIFEM. Leading figures participating in the conference include Rama Yade, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Human Rights, and Inés Alberdi, UNIFEM's Executive Director.
The conference programme will focus on measures to reinforce the effectiveness of the response of EU missions in addressing women's security needs in stabilisation and peace consolidation contexts. Particular attention will be paid to identifying institutional mechanisms of ESDP missions and crisis management instruments that can establish the EU's ability to meet this requirement. Political, military and police leaders as well as important observers will share their expertise. The conference's aim is to produce a series of conclusions and recommendations that are concrete and operational with a view to reinforced EU action on the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 1820.
