The European Commission and the French Presidency are organising the second European Road Safety Day
- On: 13.10.2008
- In: Paris, La Défense
On 13 October, Antonio Tajani, Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner for transport and Dominique Bussereau, the French State Secretary for Transport will chair the second European Road Safety Day on the issue of road safety in cities. This day is part of the European action plan that aims to halve the number of fatalities on the roads in 2010 compared with 2001, i.e. reach a maximum of 29 000 fatalities on roads in the European Union by 2010. After the first European Road Safety Day held in 2007 and devoted to young people, this second European Road Safety Day concerns road safety in urban areas. In fact, around two thirds of accidents and one third of road fatalities occur in urban areas.
The main event of the day is a colloquium that will bring together 600 people in Paris (La Défense) and an exhibition of 40 stands open to the public.
This event is aimed at all European citizens. There will be presentations of innovative iniatives, testimonials, experiences and plenty of time alloted to debates. Discussions will mainly focus on three areas:
- road users' opinions (pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, vehicle drivers, etc.)
- urban planning
- improving users' behaviour through education.
Registration is free but compulsory on the European Commission's website . Registration will be confirmed by the Commission.
