The aim of this conference is to examine the progress made midway through the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union with regard to energy and climate change challenges.

A conference and debate on energy and climate change isseus will be held on Thursday 16 October 2008 at the Europe Direct Paris - La Documentation française offices. Europe Direct offices are an official information network of the European Commission, acting as a go-between the EU and citizens at local level.

The event will bring together a variety of specialists:

  • Pascal Dupuis, head of the climate and energy efficiency department at the French Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and Town and Country Planning.
  • Jean Lamy, deputy head of energy, transport and infrastructure at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Yves Petit, Professor of public law at the European University Centre in Nancy.

The debate will be moderated by Hédia Nasraoui, member of Team Europe France (the European Commission's panel of independent conference speakers) and head of the Europe Direct office in Amiens.

The conference and debate will focus on three main topics:

  • the stakes for Community legislation: the energy/climate package (security of energy supply, reduction of greenhouse gases, etc.);
  • the impact of the legislation on citizens' daily life;
  •  the international agenda and the EU's role in negotiations.

Great attention will be given to questions from the floor.

Energy and climate change are one of the French Presidency's priorities and the speakers will try to show the tangible progress that has been made in the matter at this halfway point.

Entrance is free and open to all at the 'Documentation française' offices.
