Statement by the presidency of the Council of the European Union on the commutation of the death sentence of Parwez Kambakhsh (Afghanistan)

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which is committed to the universal abolition of the death penalty and calls on Afghanistan to maintain the moratorium that it had undertaken, welcomes with relief the decision by the Afghan judicial authorities not to sentence the journalist Parwez Kambakhsh to death.
The Presidency hopes that with regard to the twenty-year prison sentence, which should go to appeal before the supreme court, the final judgement is based on the principles of justice, clemency and respect for the freedom of expression.
