Statement by the Presidency of the Council of the European Union - Peace jirga held in Islamabad by Afghan and Pakistani leaders

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union welcomes the holding in Islamabad on 27 and 28 October of a Peace Jirga between Afghan and Pakistani leaders as a follow-up to the work of the Joint Peace Jirga of August 2007.
This Jirga is a confirmation of the determination displayed by Islamabad and Kabul to build the bilateral dialogue, and cooperation, between the two countries in the face of the challenges they have to address jointly, first and foremost terrorism. The Presidency expresses its full support for this process that holds out hope for the stabilisation and development of the region as a whole.
The Presidency of the Council of the European Union welcomes the efforts undertaken thus far by the Afghan and Pakistani authorities in combating terorrism, including the actions launched by the Pakistani authorities to protect their territory against the presence of terrorist elements targeting Afghanistan, and encourages the two countries to step up their cooperation.
