This forum aims to encourage companies to develop professional risk evaluation by presenting practical initiatives put in place in several EU countries.

Improving workers' health and safety is a major objective of European social policy. Over the last thirty years, Community directives and strategies have helped define areas for work common to the EU Member States.

For this reason, the French Presidency has decided to organise an event dedicated to issues of health and safety at work. An International Forum on Health at Work (Forum International Travail-Santé - FITS) was held in Paris on 3 and 4 November 2008, and was the highlight of the French Presidency's work in this area. Organised by the French Ministry of Labour, Labour Relations, the Family and Solidarity, it brought together a number of stakeholders working at French, European and international level to promote preventive occupational health policy: institutions, public or private bodies, social partners and businesses.

The topics addressed are issues of shared interest at national, European and international levels. Delegates discussed questions such as risk evaluation in small and medium-sized enterprises, the role of staff representatives in health and safety at work, working conditions throughout professional life, psychosocial risks and even emerging risk management, using nanotechnology as an example.

This event was an opportunity, through different speakers' contributions, to share best practices, and enrich reflection and public action to sustainably improve working conditions within the European Union.
