The "Biodiversity and Agriculture" conference, which is being held in Montpellier on 4 and 5 November 2008, highlights the strategic importance of research on interaction between agriculture and biodiversity.
Held at the initiative of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, in partnership with the French National Institute for Agricultural Research, the conference targets an international audience of policymakers and chiefs from the public and private sectors, politics and civil society.
A boom in research should help pinpoint the links between the biodiversity crisis and agricultural activities and define the regulations for optimising conservation and the means for enhancing biodiversity, at the heart of high-performance, environmentally-friendly agricultural strategies.
On the agenda are various talks, presentations of international initiatives, round tables with participation from professionals, researchers, politicians and members of civil society. Syntheses of the workshops being organised between September and November 2008 in different European Union countries will also be presented during plenary sessions.
Four topics will be addressed:
- Ecosystem-based services and agriculture;
- Agriculture, biodiversity and society - impacts and driving forces;
- Agriculture, biodiversity and landscapes, towards a coherent policy;
- Future avenues for science - Knowledge and know-how.
Each topic will be the subject of a specific discussion forum on the conference website from 1 September 2008.
The conference will be broadcast live and in full on the internet.
