The conference on human biomonitoring, a tool which allows the degree of exposure to chemical substances in the environment to be monitored, is organised by the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance in partnership with the Ministry of Health.

The conference aims to put into perspective the experience of different Member States of the European Union concerning their human biomonitoring programmes (assessment of the exposure of the population to chemical pollutants) and their possible participation and collaboration in the pilot study envisioned by the European Environment and Health Action Plan. One of the objectives of the conference is to define the modalities of harmonization that are necessary for comparative studies with other countries and in parallel to develop and implement human biomonitoring at the national level. The contribution of biomonitoring to the identification and evaluation of policies to manage health risks and public health measures will be a strong theme of the conference. The experience from North America (U.S. and Canada) will also be presented.
