Declaration by the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on the Municipal Elections in Nicaragua
- On: 12.11.2008
The Presidency of the Council of the European Union notes that the partial results of the local elections on 9 November 2008 in Nicaragua have been strongly disputed. It deplores the denial of accreditation to the national and international observers whose absence makes it difficult to evaluate the regularity of elections.
It recalls that citizens’ confidence in electoral process is vital to democratic life.
In this context, it urges the Nicaraguan government to show greater transparency in order to dispel criticism particularly in relation to the counting of votes.
The European Union will continue to closely monitor this situation.
