Under the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, three European Union film festivals are being held in Ottawa, Vancouver and Toronto.

These festivals were organized through a partnership between the EU Member States, European Commission delegation, Canadian Film Institute, and Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa, Vancouver's Cinemathèque and private partners in Toronto.

A total of eighty high-quality and exclusive film screenings are offered in these three Canadian cities. This is a significant number, which attests to the vitality and diversity of contemporary film in the EU. It is this remarkable cultural diversity that is at the heart of the opening film, "The Class" (Entre les Murs) by Laurent Cantet, Palme d'Or winner at the 2008 Cannes Festival.

French Ambassador to Canada François Delattre stated that, "this festival, established twenty-three years ago now, is based on the deep conviction, shared by all Europeans, that culture is the key that allows us to achieve true understanding of one another". Director of the Canadian Film Institute Tom McSorley presented the film selection as being "once again the best of contemporary European film, covering all genres and styles".
