Third European Development Days in Strasbourg - Davos meets Porto Alegre
- from: 15.11.2008
- to: 17.11.2008
- In: Strasbourg
For the third consecutive year, this event will focus on the subject of development. It will be an opportunity for dialogue, exchanging and confronting ideas on this subject at European level.
The central theme of this event will be local governance as well as other themes such as the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the impact of the food and financial crises on poor countries, local governance challenges and human rights.
More than 40 workshops, round tables and debates involving a diverse range of participants will take place. The numerous events planned reflects the heterogeneity of the actors in development.
The 'OFF'
A sideline initiative (the 'OFF') to raise awareness of development issues among the general public will be launched. The organisers hope to attract support for the European Development Days by showing positive images of developing countries, which are also sources of optimism and success.
A photographic exhibition, an African film festival, design exhibition, fashion show and rap musical are some of the events that demonstrate the commitment of artists to the development cause. These sideline events also include various campaigns and debates on the MDGs, female micro-entrepreneurs, and actors in development cooperation, climate change and energy justice.
Resolutely focused on youth, the European Development Days also include a youth forum in which young journalists and citizens will take part. The youth media event ("Jeunesse Media") dedicated to young people in the media will be an opportunity for young African and European journalists to exchange views by interviewing experts, civil society stakeholders and artists.
Solidarity Week
The European Development Days are also in line with the Solidarity Week that the city of Strasbourg is organising from 15 to 19 November; activities include talks, exhibitions and shows.
