Declaration of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on the appointment of Heidi Tagliavini as Head of the international independent Georgia crisis fact-finding mission

European Union foreign ministers have given their full support to the launch of an independent fact-finding mission regarding the conflict in Georgia in August 2008.
The Presidency of the Council of the European Union confirms that this mission will be headed by Heidi Tagliavini from the Swiss Confederation. Ms Tagliavini was the head of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia from 2002 to 2006. The fact-finding mission will investigate the causes of the conflict, with a view to gaining better understanding of why and how the crisis developed.
The mission will begin its work shortly and report its conclusions to the international community.
