This European conference will review the current situation of senior employment within the European Union.

In today's European demographic context, the employment of senior citizens is one of the priorities of the Lisbon Strategy (a 50% employment rate is targeted for 2010). This European conference will review how things currently stand and give a clearer insight into the differences of national situations within the European Union.

Organised in the form of sessions and round table discussions, the conference will look into various national experiences with a view to determining why some Member States have managed to significantly increase the employment rate of the over 50s since the early 1990s, while in other countries this rate has stagnated.

The best senior employment practices implemented within the European Union will be identified in terms of both public employment policies and sectoral and corporate policies conducted in Europe (career management, senior workforce management, dealing with the issue of arduousness and adaptation of work conditions). The possibility of applying these initiatives in different national environments will also be discussed.

Lastly, this conference will consider the post-Lisbon European agenda from various angles such as objectives and instruments, consistency with other objectives of the employment policy and association with the pension scheme reform and with the more general issue of population ageing within the European Union.
