The "Science in Society" conference will bring together 300 leading European figures from scientific and non-scientific areas to discuss science's role in European societies.

Launching a debate on the role of science in European societies and defining the means for strengthening dialogue between scientists and research partners are the main issues to be tackled at the "Science in Society" conference, held in Paris on 24 and 25 November 2008.

European citizens have traditionally had a very positive image of scientists but they have grown increasingly suspicious of certain scientific and technological applications, while young people are showing disinterest in science education options, inviting reflection on the role of science in European society. Have we left behind an age when science was considered an engine of progress? Do we understand these changes and the causes of this growing indifference? How do we restore confidence in a rapidly globalising world? And how do we differentiate the responsibility of scientists from that of other players in our society?

The conference will examine the relationships between scientists and research partners in five fields: agronomy, climate and energy, health, fundamental science and information and communication science and technology. The aim is to identify the best practices for reinforcing exchange and to determine the means of integrating science-society dialogue into science policy. The issue of scientific responsibility is also on the agenda.

Thematic workshops will focus on science education in museums, young people's approach to science, communication and scientific integrity and the need to define indicators.

Lastly, a draft European initiative intended to analyse relations between science and society will be presented.
