From the first day of the Poznań conference, on 1 December, Africa and the European Union adopted an important joint declaration on climate change.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Bali action plan (2007) have both shown that Africa is both one of the most vulnerable continents to climate change and one of the least responsible for global warming.
The joint EU-Africa declaration underlines the concerns of both continents as they tackle global warming of the planet, and reiterates their common aim to reach an ambitious post-Kyoto international agreement in Copenhagen at the end of 2009. It illustrates the converging views of both continents despite the deep socio-economic differences which typify them. It goes to prove more generally that extensive alliances are possible faced with the urgency of global warming, and is an important step towards the emergence of common approaches and the strengthening of preparatory cooperation for the future post-Kyoto regime.
