Cities Forum: sustainability and solidarity in our cities
Cities Forum
- from: 02.12.2008
- to: 03.12.2008
- In: Montpellier, Le Corum
The French Presidency of the Council of the European Union has chosen to focus on the theme of "sustainability and solidarity in our cities." Following the meeting of the ministers responsible for cohesion, urban development and housing, it is organising a Cities Forum in Montpellier on 2 and 3 December 2008. This event will bring together hundreds of European stakeholders in urban policies (elected officials, experts, representatives of associations and socio-professional bodies) to discuss the operational implementation of the Leipzig Charter*. There will be ten workshops: a first series focusing on the theme of the "city accessible to all" will address the issue of governance and citizen participation as a guiding thread; a second session will present innovative tools and practices to service an integrated approach to urban development. Based on experiences and on-going reflection on the adaptation to climate change and how to reduce its effects, the Cities Forum should initiate a dynamic to jointly create benchmarks and tools to develop actions in favour of the sustainable European city.
The Cities Forum will be preceded by the annual conference of the URBACT European Programme (30 November and 1st December, also to be held at Le Corum - Montpellier).
*By adopting the Leipzig Charter in May 2007, the Member States of the European Union confirmed the importance of the integrated approach in achieving sustainable cities, and expressed their wish to give greater importance to the issue of urban development within European Union policies.
