This conference will facilitate exchanges between the Lisbon Strategy coordinators and debates with representatives of the social partners and civil society.
This conference is an opportunity to debate the future, beyond 2010, of the ten-year strategy adopted in March 2000 in response to increasing globalisation and now facing the challenges of the economic and financial crisis, along with future challenges.
The morning will be devoted to a meeting of the national coordinators responsible for implementing the Lisbon Strategy in each Member State. Organised at the initiative of Christine Lagarde, the French Minister for the Economy, Industry and Employment, it will be chaired by José-Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission.
Ministers for the most part, the 27 national co-ordinators are responsible for promoting the Lisbon Strategy in their respective countries and for mobilising support for its implementation. The group of national coordinators is an informal forum for discussion between the Member States and the Commission, which traditionally meets twice a year. A press conference will be held after the meeting.
At lunchtime, Laurent Cohen-Tanugi, lawyer and author of the report “A European strategy for globalisation”, will give a presentation on Europe in the global economy.
In the afternoon, a seminar will be held on the subject of ‘Challenges and priorities for the Lisbon Strategy after 2010’. It will serve as a continuation of the discussion initiated by the coordinators with representatives of the social partners and civil society in general. The seminar will be opened by Christine Lagarde, Günter Verheugen, the Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for enterprise and industry, and Gerardo Galeote, MEP and Chair of the European Parliament's Lisbon Strategy Co-ordination Group. It will be closed by Marek Mora, the Czech Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs and the Lisbon Strategy, and Vladimir Spidla, the European Commissioner responsible for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities.
This seminar will be open to the press.
