With a strong focus on the European and international aspect - which is at the very heart of GIP SPSI's mission - this conference will be devoted to the impact of greater life expectancy and the drop in birth rates on a global scale on health and social welfare systems, particularly in emerging and developing countries. Organised under the auspices of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, this conference will facilitate discussion on the different aspects of this development, on the potential responses and the cooperation required at French and at European level.
The wide range of solutions and possibilities for international cooperation will be examined in five geographical workshops focusing respectively on China, Russia and Eastern Europe, the Maghreb, Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa. One morning will be devoted to multilateral approaches, possible responses and best practices.
While there is no ready-made solution to this issue, this conference on 8 and 9 December 2008 will be an opportunity for the representatives of large international organisations, public authorities, researchers and representatives civil society to meet, debate and share their experiences and expertise on this matter.
The ultimate aim is to reach a joint diagnosis of a question which concerns EU countries and developing countries alike.
