Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union following the launch of the first direct air and sea links between the two shores of the Taiwan Strait

The European Union welcomes the launch on 15 December of the first direct air and sea links between the two shores of the Taiwan Strait. These links give concrete expression to the agreements reached at the unofficial discussions round between the two shores in November 2008.
These talks help to build confidence and mutual understanding necessary to strengthening cooperation and stability in the Taiwan Strait and Pacific Asia.
The European Union hopes that this process will continue.
