Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union concerning the death penalty in Saint Kitts and Nevis
- On: 23.12.2008
The European Union strongly condemns the execution on 19 December 2008 of Mr Charles Elroy Laplace, who had been sentenced to death in February 2006.
This execution brings to an end the de facto moratorium in force in Saint Kitts and Nevis since 1998.
The European Union reiterates its longstanding opposition to the death penalty anywhere, whatever the circumstances. The European Union considers that the abolition of the death penalty is essential for the protection of human dignity and respect for human rights, as pointed out once again in the resolution against the death penalty adopted at the last United Nations General Assembly.
