Declaration by the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on foreign radio broadcasts in Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijani authorities have confirmed that the broadcast of foreign radio stations on local airwaves will cease as of 1 January 2009.
The Presidency of the Council of the European Union regrets this decision, which restricts the number of information sources in this country.
We remain convinced that a constructive outcome, which respects the freedom of expression and the freedom of the press and maintains the diversity of information sources in Azerbaijan, can still be found, and we are willing to work towards this with the Azerbaijani authorities.
