Area: 70 273 km² - Population: 5.7 million- Capital: Dublin
Official languages: English and Irish (Gaelic) - Date of joining the EU: 1973

A few indications
Ireland is known mainly for its literature: Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, W. B. Yeats, Samuel Beckett, James Joyce – sometimes considered as the 20th century’s most important writers – are only the best-known representatives, but there are others.
It has also often been portrayed by movies: Dubliners, My Left Foot, The Crying Game, The Snapper, The Van,
The Commitments, Michael Collins...

A country offering varied and popular types of music adapting to current taste Ireland is the object of fall-out all over the world from the fame of rock groups that are inspired to varying extents by their origins. Moreover certain people maintain that Ireland gave rise to Rock. We will particularly mention U2, including whose song Sunday, Bloody Sunday remains a symbol of commitment to Irish pacification. The Riverdance company disseminates and popularises Irish tap dancing all over the world.

Organisation of cultural policies
The Ministry of Arts, Sports and Tourism is the one that supervises resources, policies and the legislative framework governing Ireland’s national cultural institutions. The Ministry promotes better access to the national collections contained in those institutions, at appropriate places outside Dublin. Seven national cultural institutions come under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Arts, Sports and Tourism: The National Archives, the National Gallery of Ireland, the National Library of Ireland, the National Museum of Ireland, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Chester Beatty Library and the National Concert Hall.
The council of national cultural institutions was instituted in 1998 to provide a forum in which the directors of the national cultural institutions can group their experience, expertise, and future projects aimed at promoting the national cultural interest. The council also contains representatives of the Arts Council, of the Heritage Council and of the National Theatre Society (Abbey Theatre). The council makes its remarks and recommendations to the Minister of Arts, Sports and Tourism, in connection with questions relating to general policies in the fields of art, arts and culture.
