At the Abattoirs museum in Toulouse, 76 Allées Charles-de-Fitte

For the umpteenth retrospective to celebrate the passionate audacity of their subject, Toulouse's Abbatoirs museum has chosen to bring to public attention the constant and varied research by the artist, so bringing us in close proximity to the creative act. The subjects of each of the exhibitions often combine motifs from major known themes from Saura's body of work (Crowds, Crucifixions, Priests, Goya dogs, Ladies and other fantastical Portraits, etc.); they also focus on the almost thematic technical procedures (collages, accumulations, superimpositions, repetitions, montages, etc.), which give rise to so many metamorphoses and transformations.

These five exhibitions offer only a partial, although original, vision of the abundant work of Antonio Saura. But through the medium of these themes and these series, the visitor enters the private maze, the living theatre of the artist: a Baroque and Ascetic universe, "spiritual, sombre and caustic" to borrow a few of the characteristics he attributed to the "sceptical genius" of his counterpart, the writer Baltasar Gracián, the "Aragonian being" who he illustrated so well - even in his own image.

This series of exhibitions is a natural extension of the museum's interest in Saura's work, from among which it owns several prints and paintings.

The publisher 5 Continents and the Antonio Saura Archives foundation are jointly publishing three works which will be publicly launched in Toulouse on May 15th, 2008.
- Tauromachie (Bullfighting) by Jean Bescós, Marcel Cohen and Antonio Saura
- Erotica by Antonio Saura and Jacques Henric
- Contre Guernica (Against Guernica) by Antonio Saura, preface by Félix de Azúa
