For 6 months, Lithuania and Grand Est display themselves, query themselves and answer themselves based on complex and intermingled notions that have made their history: territory, borders, exchanges, language…
"You are my mirror": Grand Est and Lithuania in the mirror.
On one hand, Lithuania, whose membership in the Schengen space invites people to rethink and reinterpret historical relationships with its neighbors.
On the other, the French "Grand Est" region, open to Europe and experiencing, day by day, the permeability of borders.
It is the "Grand Est" that starts ball rolling as of July 1, with the invitation sent to two Lithuanian artists - the much-in-demand Deimantas Narkevicius and the very young Gintaras Didziapetris - to work together and to imagine some new works at the Frac Lorraine in Metz. Some works from the collections of the Frac du Grand Est will be presented simultaneously based on the notion of monumentality, while the Palais du Tau in Reims will reflect on the "ex-votos", where, again, the Lithuanian works will constitute a response to the works selected from the Frac collections by the administrator of the Center of Contemporary Art in Vilnius. At the Frac Alsace in Sélestat and at the the Frac Franche-Comté in Besançon, some Lithuanian artists will put on a performance.
Until October, the Grand Est public will be able in this way to discover and appreciate other aspects of Lithuanian creation (literature, cinema, electronic music or the culinary arts). A Lithuanian art critic will be invited to Metz. Some exchanges will take place between several art schools in the Grand Est and Vilnius.
Then, from October to December, it is Vilnius that, in turn, will feature the Grand Est on the occasion of a wide-ranging exhibition assessing the Lithuanian art scene and the collection of the Frac du Grand Est.
Some artists from the Grand Est will be invited to create some new works in Vilnius.
These six months of exchanges will give rise to publication of a trilingual catalogue.
