Many popular balls took place in town-squares and firestations around France on 12, 13, 14 and 15 July 2008 to celebrate European music and culture.

The organisers could use two free resources:
- "La Valse de l'Europe" ("The Waltz of Europe") for balls with orchestras: This instrumental piece was composed especially by the French accordionist, Marc Perrone, and was played at all the balls. The composition can be downloaded in MP3 format free-of-charge, along with the musical score, on the Bals d'Europe website: www.balsdeurope.fr.
- The "Euro Disco Bal" for balls with recorded music: DJ RV and Vartoch, the organisers of the Nuit des Follivores in Paris, have put together an exclusive compilation of 27 disco tracks from 27 countries in 23 languages which is intended for all balls with DJs.

Some of the balls hosted in some of France's big cities had special themes. Bordeaux has a festive schedule lined up which revisit Catalan music with performances by Los Manolos and the Patriarcas de la Rumba. Lyon  stage a "Children's ball" with a dance workshop organised by the 'Compagnie des Songes'. Parents then joined the children to enjoy the Romanian brass brand Lui Craciun, the Franco-Italian group 'La Premiata Orchestra di Ballo'. A folk performance, 'Boombal' from the Flemish groups 'Embrun' and 'Naragonia' will conclude the evening.

Paris, Nantes and Arles are among the many cities which joined in the festivities. Smaller towns such as Saint-Chartier or Moirans-en-Montagne, which also staged the "bal des Enfanfares", with varied programmes.
