Culturesfrance and the Maison des écrivains et de la littérature (French writers and literature association) are inviting 27 writers to France to celebrate the publication of their latest works. These authors, selected in collaboration with the Centre National du Livre (French national book center) and representing 21 European nations, are at the cutting edge of literature, emphasizing the quality of French publishers' work, the diversity of their foreign collections and the range of literary themes tackled. Throughout the autumn/fall, from Paris to Marseille, via Lyon, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Lille, Nantes, Toulouse, Rennes, Aix-en-Provence, Tours, Le Mans, Lorient and Avignon, the writers will be holding a series of meetings with their fans, demonstrating the extraordinary vitality of European literary creativity. The heirs to a shared artistic heritage, they produce inspired work in which, through the singularity of approaches, languages and styles of writing, the modern aspect of European challenges appears in all its complexity.
It is through novels, short stories, poetry, essays and youth literature that our humanity, in a kaleidoscope of variations, confronts the very thing which threatens it. Great authors are joining this Tour de France of European writers, the route of which passes via higher and secondary educational establishments, media libraries, libraries, bookshops, literature festivals, cultural centers, theatres and national monuments. In the general context of their work, the authors will present their latest books, from which extracts will be read thanks to the participation of actors Serpentine Tessier and Mathias Mégard.
Generally with help from a French translator, they will together examine the issue of translation and its dialectical requirements. This question, which is the main theme of these debates, will shed light on the subtle mechanics of the links between author and translator, between restriction and freedom.
Echoing this Tour de France, a series of public events and one professional event will contribute to a reflection on European thought and its circulation, from an historical and geopolitical perspective. Entitled "Letters from Europe", these meetings will provide an opportunity to meet Anne-Marie Garat, Juan Goytisolo (to be confirmed), Eugène Green and Predrag Matvejević, and will feature appearances by actors Dominique Reymond, Philippe Morier-Genoud and Didier Sandre (to be confirmed).
