Celts and Scandinavians: artistic encounters (7th century-12th century)

Musée national du Moyen-Âge (National museum of the Middle-Ages), Paris, 5th arrondissementThe Cluny museum is turning a spotlight on the peoples of the North, who have been largely overlooked by ancient ethnography: Celts and Scandinavians. This is an opportunity to put an end to many clichés. Around 80 works from the most prestigious museums in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Sweden and Norway trace the pattern of commercial, spiritual and artistic links forged between these far-off lands. Far from being archaic, unsophisticated and bloodthirsty civilisations, the British Isles and Scandinavia communicated via human, commercial and spiritual exchange. The Catholic Church played a key part in this… Often over-generalized as the famous "Vikings", these northern people were also farmers, merchants and explorers who were open to the world. This exhibition is proof of this.
