Emmanual Krivine conducts the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, which he led in 2006, in a wonderfully colourful programme that symbolises the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

"Nuages Gris" and "Unstern" feature among the last manuscripts written for the piano by Franz Liszt in the 1880s. Sombre and desolate, these short pieces (two minutes for "Nuages Gris", six for "Unstern") open doors to the then unknown musical language. It is not at all surprising that composers from the 20th century seize hold of these works wanting to reveal their mystery through the orchestra. Heinz Holliger, composer, oboist and brilliant conducter, did so with its own poetry of sounds, where perhaps, Liszt would have found himself.

Another orchestral work, that of Ravel includes its own works written for the piano, listening to "Une Barque sur l'Océan" (1905-1906), who could imagine that such a work was not intended for the orchestra?

"Images pour Orchestre" by Debussy, composed between 1906 and 1912 also belongs to this world of new tones. The work's three movements - Gigues, Ibéria and Rondes de Printemps - exceed their folkloric pretext and, if the three pieces from Iberia indeed evoke images of Spain, it is the alternation between the night time fragrances and light filled rythms which captivate and fill with wonder.

Although he was a more academic figure, Saint-Saens, in the last of his piano concertos, seemed to reconcile a pianistic writing inherited from Liszt and a typically French orchestral clarity. Instantly familier, the great Aldo Ciccolini was also able to transform the piano into an orchestra.

Programme:
Franz Liszt
"Grey Clouds" & "Unstern" (orchestration by Heinz Holliger)
Camille Saint-Saëns
Piano concerto 5 "Egyptien"
Maurice Ravel
"Une barque sur l'océan"
