An historical painter, he also designed theatre costumes, architectural motifs, interiors and furniture. The Louvre's exhibition assembles around 40 paintings and drawings, as well as some furniture. The French public therefore for the first time has an opportunity to get to know an artist who combines a specifically northern European art form with themes related to universal ideas at that turn of the century.

The exhibition is supported by the Foundation of Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark and His Royal Highness the Prince Consort, as well as the generosity of the New Carlsberg Foundation and the OAK Foundation Denmark.

Catalogue: Abildgaard, 1743-1809 edited by Thomas Lederballe and Élisabeth Foucart-Walter, jointly published by the Musée du Louvre Editions/Gallimard, 160 pages, 29 euros. The catalogue was produced due to the support of the Foundation of Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark and His Royal Highness the Prince Consort, the New Carlsberg Foundation and Danske Bank International.

In the Louvre auditorium: series of talks at 6.30pm on Monday January 12th, 19th and 26th, 2009, with the participation of Martin Myrone, Tate Britain, London; Anna Ottavi Cavina, University of Bologna; Alex Potts, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
