Under the French EU Presidency, the French embassy co-organised a European news and television seminar with the German, Spanish, UK and Italian embassies in Greece, the European Parliament representations in Athens and Cyprus and the European Commssion.

The seminar aimed to analyse the treatment and future of European news items on the television and debate the solutions to be adopted for better handling of European news in the context of the 2009 European elections and the recent and rapid development in Greece of new forms of news broadcasting on digital terrestrial television.

The seminar was opened by the Greek Government spokesperson Evangelos Antonaros, the Vice-President of the European Parliament Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou, Chair of the European Parliament's Culture and Education Committee Katerina Batzeli and the Foreign Affairs spokesperson George Koumoutsakos. The seminar was open to the public and organised into four round tables:

  • European News on European TV Channels;
  • Cooperation between European TV Channels;
  • European Communication on TV: General or Specialised?
  • Public Opinion and 2009 European Elections: The Role of Television.

Participants, journalists, media experts and government representatives also debated with a large public of around 500 people including leading figures from the media, journalism and academia as well as students.
