European Concert in Nairobi

Within the framework of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, a large, free concert celebrating cultural diversity was organised on 4 October last in Uhuru Park by the French Alliance in Nairobi. The European Commission delegation, Austrian and Finnish embassies and Kenyan Ministry for Culture and Social Services also participated in this major event that attracted almost 30,000 people despite lashing rain.
Acrobats, traditional dancers and popular Finnish music opened the afternoon, followed by urban music, notably an excellent joint performance by Kenyan and Austrian hip hop groups Ukoo Flani and Texta; Admiral T, a French group whose Kenyan debut was a real crowd pleaser; and Jua Kali, the triumphant Kenyan rap star.
This concert was also an opportunity for young Kenyan artists - Afro-fusion - to produce themselves on stage. They were supported by the Alliance Française as part of the "Spotlight on Kenyan Music" cultural development programme. The public showed great interest in this music style, which is as yet little known in Kenya.
