Nicolas Sarkozy, the President of the Council of the European Union and Victor Yushchenko, the President of the Ukraine, adopted a joint declaration establishing the political framework for EU-Ukraine relations.
The Ukrainian delegation was led by President Victor Yushchenko. The European Union was represented by the President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy, in his role of President of the Council of the European Union; José Manuel Durão Barroso, President of the European Commission; and Javier Solana, the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy.
This summit, held in the context of deepening EU-Ukraine relations, was the opportunity to give a decisive boost to negotiations on a new enhanced agreement that were launched in 2007. The main objective of the French Presidency was to define the political framework of the new partnership between the EU and this country of major importance for European prosperity and stability.
